Taos Retreat

Went up to Taos this weekend and visited my favorite places, including this amazing zen garden... this is my happy place, for sure. This is what I imagine Giverney must look like to Monet.

Maya Deren

I am currently obsessed with the films of Maya Deren... (as recommended by Wendall Harrington on her essential film list) Her images are just so ahead of her time. amazing. remarkable. a must see.

Moon Landing Anniversary

Today, we landed on the moon! (well 40 years ago anyway...)

I've been watching a lot of the coverage of the moon landing on the History channel today... its kind of amazing to watch, especially when Walter Cronkite tears up (may he rest in peace)... one thing that i learned:

The soil on the surface of the moon has a high percentage of glass in it and that is why it is so reflective of the sun and appears to 'glow' in the night sky.

wow.

Happy Fourth of July! (a day later...)

I took these pictures last night, during the Santa Fe Symphony concert I went to... Its funny how immediate holidays like this one are, and how it can affect an enormous crowd in pretty much the same way. I was sitting outside on another beautiful evening here in Santa Fe listening to the symphony play songs from the great american songbook by Gershwin and Sousa, and they played a medley from "Oklahoma!" and the Cowboy Overture by John Williams and it I am always amazed how excited people get by hearing the same old songs that everyone knows and grew up with. Do we love the familiarity of it all? or do we just have fond memories of these songs and holidays past? (I have often noticed the same reactions at Christmas time at the mere mention of caroling and Christmas carols...) By far the highlight of the evening was the sing-a-long section, (when most people of my profession cringe if not run in fear...) I noticed several things I never noticed before... A) I never realized that the original words to 'Dixie' are such bad english! (probably because of its origins in minstrel shows but seriously, no wonder yankees think we are such hicks!) and B) how quickly a group singing of the Battle Hymn of the Republic turns into a gospel choir, complete with people ready to testify their hands up to the sky! (and in Santa Fe no less, a city committed to being "different" than the rest, interesting...) and finally C) how truly amazed groups of complete strangers can be over fireworks. What a truly American tradition... blow things up for the sake of blowing things up and making a 'show' out of it, usually set to the music of Neil Diamond, or Lee Greenwood. Oh the sheer (non-sensical) spectacle! (during which I had to ask myself, 'I wonder what that is doing for global warming...') Happy Birthday America.

Random Randomness

I have been meaning to upload these pictures for a long time... I think they are the reason I always carry my digital camera around with me, always. enjoy! (i think my fave is the big YES balloon in the sky... something I found that I never knew I was looking for yet somehow am so happy to have found! lol)
