Spotted on the streets of NYC...

I think that this ad campaign is totally genius... I smile every time I see it.

It reminds me of this Amazing book I am reading at the moment. I am reading the 'Unbearable Lightness of Being' by Milan Kundera. I am really enjoying it because it is just so beautifully written. It makes me think differently about life... that might explain the last two posts I guess... there is a quick chapter about New York that I want to share with y'all...

"The Beauty of New York: Franz said, "Beauty in the European sense has always had a premeditated quality to it. We've always had an aesthetic intention and a long-range plan. That's what enabled Western man to spend decades building a Gothic cathedral or a Renaissance piazza. The beauty of New York rests on a completely different base. It's unintentional. It arose independent of of human design, like a stalagmitic cavern. Forms which are in themselves quite ugly turn up fortuitously, without design, in such incredible surroundings that they sparkle with a sudden wondrous poetry."

Sabina said, "Unintentional beauty. Yes. Another way of putting it might be 'beauty by mistake.' Before beauty disappears entirely from this earth, it will go on existing for a while by mistake. 'Beauty by mistake'-the final phase in the history of beauty." "

I think this is the perfect description of New York City... and anyone else who lives here will agree. I just love the way the author describes the beauty of the city so succinctly. I'd recommend reading this book to anyone. it's just beautiful, admittedly overly sentimental at times, but overall incredible.

Lovely or Lonely?

I have seen this graffitti before but I always wondered does it say 'Lovely' or 'Lonely'? Is it a kind of a metaphor for city life? Maybe... or maybe someone did this unintentionally and I am just reading too far into it! lol

Il Tabarro

I went to the coolest Opera the other day... It was all the way out in Red Hook but it was an Opera by Puccini called 'Il Tabarro' which is part of his piece called 'Il Trittico' (that you might remember they performed at the Met last spring...) Anyway this particular short opera is set on a Barge... So a rogue opera company out in Brooklyn actually performed it on a historic barge.

The concept was pretty amazing I have to say I was impressed with it. I love the idea of rogue opera! That sounds like something I would love to be involved in... But overall it wasn't the Met quality as far as the opera part goes. But it definatly was one of the most innovative performances I have ever experienced, and I reccomend it. I think its playing through next week...? The company is called Vertical Players and if you can make it all the way to red hook then you really should do it.

wow.

Concert Fun

This is some what I like to call Retroactive posting... AKA: I am too busy to post these as they happen but i get around to it eventually...

I've been going to a lot of concerts lately... I went to the Artic Monkies concert last week and had a brush with fame...

Kelli and I were standing by the this trailer near the edge of the venue (in central park) waiting for the concert to start. There is a window in this trailer that is mostly covered except there is a gap where we can see thru to inside the trailer. So naturally Kelli and I looked in... and it was kind of funny because we saw this girl mixing drinks, gin and tonics to be exact... and then this chick brought them out on stage and set them out next to the instruments. Afterall being a rock star means that you can play a concert and have drinks ready for you on stage. oh the life...

I know its a dark picture but on the right you can see the green shirt the drummer was wearing on stage... This concert was a hipster hot spot let me tell you. Everyone was wearing vests and tight jeans... lots of hot guys but the bad part was there was lots of pushing and "hipster moshing" and for short girls like me not so good... plus there were so many really tall guys I could barely see the stage... overall a good concert though. Have to say i like their first album better.

You can see the red cups onstage next to the drum kit... lol

I have to say that I love going to outdoor concerts... I am going to be really sad when it gets colder and all the concerts go inside... I guess it will be opera season soon right? lol

I also went to Farm Aid this past weekend... It was the first time I went to this kind of all day concert event. It was awesome. Kind of Redneck and lots of fun... Willie Nelson in all his glory... lol... (and there was funnel cake! yay!) It was on Randall Island and i think it must have been what it was like at Woodstock or some of those other large festival concerts in the sixties must have been like... there must have been 100,000 people there. It was kind of too many people for me. A few too many hippies there to doing their crazy hippie dancing to willie nelson songs? i don't really get that. but whatevs... it was fun.

And now for something completely different...

A picture from the Rufus Wainwright concert I went to a few weeks ago also in central park... it was raining the entire concert but it was still a really good show. I love his music so much.

This was during Hallelujah... I know this picture is a bit blurry but i think it gives you a little bit of the Ambiance of the concert, or something right?

This old Guy is searching for buried treasure...
The fake plastic trees...
